FIGHTERS TOP GUNSLINGERS IN FINAL SECONDS - 57-58

SAN ANTONIO, TX - The IFL I-35 Rivalry (a.k.a. Texas Takedown) is officially a marquee game in the Indoor Football League.

T.J. Edwards threw a touchdown to Cole Blackman with no time left as the Frisco Fighters defeated the San Antonio Gunslingers 58-57 at Jon Wayne Field at the Freeman Coliseum on Saturday night.

The offenses stole the show in the first half, and they both delivered in the first quarter. The Fighters (11-3) got on the board first as Justin Rankin scored a rushing touchdown to put the Fighters up early, but the Gunslingers (6-7) came back with Sam Castronova finding NyQwan Murray in the end zone to tie the game, and TC Stevens converted on the deuce to give San Antonio a 9-7 lead. Frisco responded as Martez Carter scored a rushing touchdown to give the Fighters a 14-9 lead going into the second quarter.

Rankin, a running back, was a key factor in the Bay Area Panthers' IFL National Championship season last year.

The second quarter saw more of the same as Sam Castronova scored on a quarterback keeper, and T.C. Stevens converted on the deuce to give the Gunslingers an 18-14 lead. The Fighters answered as T.J. Edwards, the reigning IFL MVP, scored on a quarterback keeper of his own to put Frisco back in front. Castronova found DJ Myers in the end zone to put the Gunslingers up 25-21, but there was enough time for Edwards to respond, and he did as he found Phazione McClurge in the end zone to give the Fighters a 28-25 lead at halftime.

San Antonio scored on their first possession of the second half as Austin Upshaw scored, and the Gunslingers converted a two point conversion as Castronova; who couldn't get the hold on the extra point, found Colby Byrd in the end zone to give San Antonio the lead. Frisco responded as T.J. Edwards scored on a quarterback keeper, and the Fighters converted on the two point conversion to take a 36-33 lead. San Antonio came right back as Castronova found Upshaw in the end zone again, and TC Stevens converted on the deuce to give the Gunslingers a 42-36 lead.

The fourth quarter started with the Fighters tying the game on an Edwards quarterback keeper, and Frisco took the lead as Larry Harrington converted on the two point conversion. Sam Castronova then threw an interception, but the Gunslingers stopped Edwards on fourth-and-five. San Antonio took advantage of the stop as Castronova found NyQwan Murray in the end zone to give the Gunslingers a 49-44 lead. The Fighters responded as Justin Rankin scored a rushing touchdown and Edwards converted the two point conversion to put Frisco back on top and set up a thrilling finish.

Castronova found Murray in the end zone, and San Antonio converted on the two point conversion to take a 57-52 lead. The Fighters had 18 seconds to win the game, and Edwards quickly moved Frisco into Gunslingers territory. The Fighters had a Third and Two with four seconds left and needed to score a touchdown to win the game. Edwards avoided tacklers and found Cole Blackman in the end zone with no time left to give Frisco the win.

The Gunslingers playoff hopes were already slim going into the game, but now they are even slimmer. If the Gunslingers are going to make the playoffs, they are going to need to win most of their last three games and get assistance from around the league.

The Gunslingers will host the Massachusetts Pirate on July 6 for a 6:05 pm Central kickoff.
